After beginning his life in a secluded religious community, the modern world lies before Sepp Klemens and he has much to learn. Having acquired a wife, a new stepdaughter and a new home, he is about to discover his late mother’s family and the pleasure to be found in a glass of fine wine.

     Sepp’s mother, Francesca Proul, appears to have walked away from her home and family without a single regret back in 1963. She never spoke of her family to Sepp, and since she died when he was a young child, he knew nothing about her early life.

     Only a short time after his marriage, Sepp travels to California with his wife Claire and her daughter, Lizzie. After delivering Lizzie at school for her freshman year of college, Sepp and Claire embark on a startling journey into his mother’s past. Francesca’s family heritage is not what he expected it would be. As he gets to know the Prouls, he reaches a new understanding of his late parents and learns more about himself. But nothing is simple about the Prouls, and even among his own family, Sepp encounters violence and danger.
